Visually Impaired

On this page you can find a summary of the most important information on our services for people with a visual impairment. Our Transport Network Accessibility Guide (Italian only), available at the end of the page and free of charge from all ATM Points, will provide more complete and detailed information on all the work planned as part of the 2009-2011 Three-Year Plan to Improve Accessibility.

Before setting out on a journey, we invite you to contact the ATM Freephone Number 800.80.81.81
at least an hour before departure for information on the desired route.

On the Underground

Tactile Walk-Routes, Tactile Station Map
The stations of Rho Fiera Milano, Pero, Duomo, Abbiategrasso,Garibaldi FS and Maciachini all have tactile walk-routes, a type of tactile paving designed to facilitate orientation inside station areas for people with a visual impairment, guiding them from street-level to the platform and back to street-level upon arrival. As part of our station refurbishment project, we are also installing a tactile walk-route in the Loreto station on both Line 1 and Line 2. Following the pilot project undertaken in the Garibaldi FS station, we are considering the revision of all signage present in underground stations. In mid-level station areas at Rho Fiera Milano, Pero, Duomo, Abbiategrasso and Maciachini there are tactile maps of the station in Braille and relief lettering; we plan to install tactile maps at Loreto and Garibaldi FS as well.

Toilets
Where present, the tactile walk-route will also guide you to the toilet entrance. We are working to refurbish the toilets in the most crowded stations: hitherto work has been completed at Cordusio and Garibaldi FS.
In 2009 toilet refurbishment work is planned for the Duomo, S. Babila and Loreto stations; maintenance work will be carried out on toilets at Bisceglie, Rho Fiera, Famagosta, Centrale FS and Maciachini.

Entrance Barriers
At the entrance barriers, the barrier next to the Station Operator’s booth is reserved for you; this barrier is regulated by a bar which moves horizontally. Please stamp your ticket using the stamping machine/card reader next to this barrier.

Requesting Assistance to Reach the Platform and/or Exit the Station
When you pass through the barriers, you can ask the Station Operator for assistance in reaching the platform and/or give them the name of your destination if you need assistance when you exit the train. If you do not ask for assistance, or turn it down, the Operator will monitor you via CCTV to ensure that you reach the platform and board the train safely.

Tactile Paving Marking the Safety Limit (Yellow Line) at the Edge of the Platform
All Line 1 stations with the exception of Molino Dorino, Sesto 1° Maggio FS and Sesto Rondò have a paving strip with small hemispherical bumps running parallel to the platform edge to mark the safety limit; the yellow colour of this strip contrasts with the paving in other areas. During 2009 we will install safety strips in all Line 2 and Line 3 stations.

Tactile Paving to Mark the Gap between the Two Engines
To avoid people falling onto the track as they enter trains, all Line 1 stations have tactile paving with small hemispherical bumps marking the gap between the train’s two engines..

Voice Announcements
During 2009 we will install a voice announcement system to inform passengers of the train’s destination at Cadorna F.N. Triennale, Garibaldi FS and Centrale FS; this system has already been installed at the Pagano and Cascina Gobba junctions.
All stations on the three underground lines, except for end stops and junctions, have a voice announcement system to inform passengers of the name of the stop which is activated when doors open.

Onboard Trains
The train floor is level with the platform to ensure that passengers can enter and exit easily. However, we recommend that you always take care on entering and exiting trains because there is a gap between train and platform. To avoid passengers falling onto the track as they enter the train we have installed rubber protections in the gap between carriages pulled by a single engine. We are also testing a cover for this space in the form of an aluminium device with an elastic belt. When the train arrives at a platform a noise signal will indicate that the doors are open; this will guide you towards the door when you enter and exit trains. These signals can also be heard inside carriages to guide you towards the open doors.
The latest generation Meneghino trains, introduced from March 2009, also have an announcement system to inform passengers of the destination station and the next stop.
Next to the first door in each carriage there is an intercom device allowing passengers to communicate directly with the Control Room in the event of an emergency.

Assistance in Case of Need
In the event of need, if you are in a station mid-level area, we advise you to contact the Station Operator directly. If you are on the platform, all Line 3 platforms have 3 emergency video-intercom devices which allow you to contact the Operator directly: this system consists of an intercom with an internal video camera showing the face of the person asking for assistance. When new CCTV cameras are installed in 2009 we will also equip the platforms of ten stations on Line 1 and Line 2 with emergency systems used in the same way as those already installed on Line 3.

Emergency Alarm Devices in Stations
At several points in every station, on both mid-level areas and platforms, there are alarm systems consisting of a red flashing light with a noise alarm. If these devices go off there is an emergency and the station should be evacuated.

Surface Vehicles

Restructured Stops
We have restructured the stops on some routes already served by low-floor vehicles or which will be served by these in the future, to adapt them to the construction properties of the vehicles. In addition to being broader, these stops are level with the floor of vehicles to make it easier to pass from the stop to the vehicle and vice versa; these stops also have tactile strips guiding passengers towards vehicles. Hitherto 600 out of a total of 3100 stops within the city of Milan have been restructured; projects for the adaptation of stops on numerous surface routes are planned.

Onboard Vehicles
On all new vehicles, we have increased the size of lettering on the displays showing the route number and the destination stop to ensure that these are easier to see from outside. To make it easier to access surface vehicles, all city buses and some types of trolley-bus and tram are low-floor vehicles, with no steps to enter and exit. Once on board, when you stamp your ticket the stamping machine/card reader will beep to inform you if your ticket has been correctly stamped or not.
One of the objectives of our Three-Year Plan to Improve Accessibility is to guarantee the correct functioning of next-stop voice announcements on 95% of surface vehicles.
