On this page you can find a summary of the most important information on our services for people with a mobility impairment. Our Transport Network Accessibility Guide (Italian only), available at the end of the page and free of charge from all ATM Points, will provide more complete and detailed information on all the work planned as part of the 2009-2011 Three-Year Plan to Improve Accessibility.
Before setting out on a journey, we invite you to contact the ATM Freephone Number 800.80.81.81 at least an hour before departure for information on your desired route and facilities for moving around underground stations (escalators, stairlifts and lifts).
On underground
Stairlifts
To allow wheelchair users to reach the various station levels and return to street-level, 25 stations on the network have fixed stairlift systems, consisting of electrically operated moving platforms. The presence of this facility is indicated outside the station by the relevant symbol.
Lifts
Some stations have lifts connecting the various station levels and street-level; for your personal safety, these lifts are constantly monitored by station operators using a CCTV network. To find out which stations have lifts please consult the network map.
Signed Routes
All stations have specific signs to guide you towards lifts and escalators following a specially designed route.
Toilets
To ensure full accessibility, we are working to refurbish the toilets in the most crowded stations: hitherto work has been completed at Cordusio and Garibaldi FS. In 2009 toilet refurbishment work is planned for the Duomo, S. Babila and Loreto stations; maintenance work will be carried out on toilets at Bisceglie, Rho Fiera, Famagosta, Centrale FS and Maciachini.
Entrance Barriers
At the entrance barriers, the barrier next to the Station Operator’s booth is reserved for you; this barrier is regulated by a bar which moves horizontally. Please stamp your ticket using the stamping machine/card reader next to this barrier.
If you use a wheelchair and want to ensure that a member of our staff is on hand to help you, you can tell the Operator which station you wish to travel to. The train driver will be informed of your presence on board and will be able to help you if necessary. We remind you that informing our Operator of your destination is completely optional.
Onboard Trains
According to current Italian legislation, each underground train may carry only one wheelchair user. Wheelchair users must park, at their own responsibility, in the space reserved for them and use the safety devices provided. These spaces can be found in the first carriage in the direction of travel, next to the door closest to the driver’s cabin. Underground trains are equipped with chain devices to hold wheelchairs in place.
Assistance in Case of Need
In the event of need we advise you to contact the Station Operator directly if you are near the Operator’s booth or able to reach it. Mid-level areas in Line 3 stations have emergency intercom systems allowing you to communicate with the Operator and the Control Room.
Our Operators constantly monitor the platforms of all stations via CCTV cameras connected to the monitors in their booth; these images can also be seen from the control Room. When new cameras are installed in 2009 we will also equip the platforms of ten stations on Line 1 and Line 2 with emergency systems for requesting help.
Emergency Signalling Devices in Stations
At several points in every station, on both mid-level areas and platforms, there are red flashing lights with a noise alarm. If these devices go off there is an emergency and the station should be evacuated.
Surface Vehicles
Restructured Stops
We have restructured the stops located on routes already served by low-floor vehicles or which will be served by these in the future, to adapt them to the construction properties of the vehicles. The new structure of these stops also allows for more efficient use of the vehicles’ retractable ramps.
To ensure the continuity of travel we have also made sure that road crossings in the vicinity of stops have wheelchair ramps.Hitherto 600 out of a total of 3100 stops within the city of Milan have been restructured; projects for the adaptation of stops on numerous surface routes are planned.
Onboard Vehicles
To ensure easier access to surface vehicles for all users, and especially those who experience difficulty moving, all buses and all new trolley-buses and city trams are low-floor vehicles; in other words, passengers do not have to step up or down from vehicles, which have an retractable ramp. Each vehicle also has a reserved wheelchair space with safety devices. The vehicles suited to the transport of wheelchair users are marked on the outside with the international symbol for mobility impairment.
